Habitat - Indoor :: Heating question

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Thu Jan 23, 2014 1:31 pm   Heating question

I recently just bought the EHEIM Jager 300.
It does say it is completely submersible but reading the warnings on the directions has put me in doubt.

I currently have it laying at the bottom of the tank, the dial under water.

That should be ok correct?
I can angle it and have the dial pop out above the water line too.

Does anyone have any experience with these?
Thanks for the advice :D

I also own this heater and have it mounted horizontally. Couple of tips:

1. Remove the white plastic at the end, it's used for shipping and your turtle may eat it.
2. I also would put it a little higher, heaters work better with some space around them.
3. If possible I would turn the heater 180 so the cable is closer to the wall. My turtle sometimes chews on the wire if its in the middle of the tank.

Yeah I pushed it farther up towards the top of the tank. She climbed all over it at first but now has left it alone.

I am now trying to figure out why my fluval fx5 is leaking :(

Been working on this all morning haha.

If I recall correctly, when the company that made them (Ebo Jager) was bought (by Eheim), they temporarily lost their certification to say they were fully submersible even though they are capable to work in that manner.

How long have you had the FX5?

Oh crap really? Hmm I must find the documentation.
Kept it on all night and seems to be fine. I might try and angle it so the dial is out of the water.

Ive had the fx5 for less than a year.

I think Steve was saying they lost the official certification because of the ownership change, but that you'll be fine not that you should be concerned.

Yes ljapa and Kansasslider are correct that they should be fully submersible now, but I think they don't offer life-time warranties anymore.

That is correct when Eheim purchased Ebo jager, they lost the UL certification and the ability to label the unit as fully submersible. They had to re-apply for the certification under the new company name and it took a while. So yes both the ones marked as fully submersible and the ones not marked at all are both identical heaters and both fully submersible. A phone call to eheim explained all of that. The really old ebo jager ones from like the 80's are green instead of blue.

You might want to look into a heater guard for this heater. Last time I bought one, I remember it gave me burns if touched it for more than 1-2 seconds. I emailed Eheim and they told me it's probably normal and to also look into a heater guard.

While I'm at it(sorry for threadjacking) does anyone have any recommendations on a heater guard or a heater that might not burn? I'm still reluctant on getting this one but I really need to upgrade the aquarium heater now after returning the Eheim.

You'll have to check ebay for guards as they usually come straight from China. Otherwise you'll have to make your own from PVC or buy a different kind of heater, like an inline heater or one with a built in guard.
