Other Turtle Discussion :: Painted Turtle or other suggestion

Hello all. I had a RES 19 years, she just passed away a couple weeks ago. I am upset. I am trying to decide if I want another turtle. I am considering a painted turtle. I would prefer a pretty turtle and as small as possible. Any suggestions? I would also love to see photos of your painted turtle or turtle you have. Thanks.

Sorry about your loss I own 4 different turtles and they are all great in their own way. My mississippi is a male and the smallest by far. He is just so cute and shy. My diamondbacks are also uniuqe but much more aggressiive. My white concentric db has gorgous markings and she is a lot smaller than my res. I love the look of albino turtles and pastels. I'm sure whatever turtle you choose it will have a great home. Happy turtle shopping!

Thank you. I am looking at painted turtles but open to others. I can't believe I'm getting another one. They are a lot of trouble sometimes.

Southern Painted Turtles are the smallest of all the painted turtles.

I've often thought that when I get a 125+ gallon for my female RES, I'd like to get a southern painted for the 55 gallon tank she is currently in.

Very sorry to hear about Kiwi

I really like painteds as well, and a male would be even smaller but will lose a lot of the vibrant colors when he goes melanistic.

I'm so sorry, but also glad you aren't shying away from having another turtle. I think it's best for you to consider what works for you. What did you like and dislike (if anything) about having an RES? Do you want a turtle that requires more maintenance, or less maintenance? Painteds from what I understand are really hardy. Map turtles can be more sensitive to their environments, but they have amazing personalities and are totally worth it. Terrapins are another possibility, like a diamondback, since the brackish water would be a cool learning experience.

Diamondbacks are gorgeous but get them from a breeder so they are freshwater. Brackish ones are usually wild-caught
