I've heard a lot of people suggest siliconing plexiglass to the lip of the filter to reduce the falling noise. I want to try it out, but what do I do with Leonardo for two days without any filter? Won't the water get really gross?

The water could get gross, but you have to remember that some people on here don't even have a filter. I'd say just clean the tank each day, but I don't know how big of a tank you have. On the other hand, my filter broke a little while back and my turts were without one for a couple of days until I could get a new one.

What kind of filter are you talking about---an Aquaclear?

I think it's a power whisper or something like that. It's similar to an Aquaclear, except that it has two waterfals.

Do you have a picture? Each filter has subtle changes that might make it difficult to attach Plexiglas.

For that price, I would get an Aquaclear. If you don't want to silicone a lip extension, you could drill holes on the cover like I did:
