Hey all,

New to the site. Thanks for having me. I need some help with a tank upgrade I recently did. I have a M RES about 5". He was in a 55 gallon tank for about 1 1/2 and it worked out great. I recently move him to a new 75 gallon tank. My old setup on the 55 was a Fluval 306 with the normal layer of filtration. My water was crystal clear with no smell using the 55. I would do normal water changes and maintenance as required.

I took a day to move roughly 50 gallons of water from the 55 to the new 75 (to keep the colonized water) I added about 15 gallons of well water to the 75 to complete the new setup. I moved the Fluval 306 to the tank and also added a Fluval 106 canister filter and a Aquaatop CF400UV canister filter. I have a total of 818 GPH flow rate. I figured this would work nice. I think I am wrong! The tank has been active for about 4 days but the smell is something I have never smelt from a turtle tank before. The water is starting to become clear but the smell will not go away. Almost unbearable and defiantly unbearable for my pregnant wife. Did I do something wrong when I move him? Please help. Thank in advance.

Could this be an Ammonia spike? Do you have a water test kit?

By the time I went to test the water yesterday the smell had gone away and the water is crystal clear. Must have be am ammonia spike and the bio kicked in quick? Thanks for the response, Steve.

Probably but stick to your partial water change schedule.
