Thanks to a discussion on here today, I went out and bought a digital thermometer to check the temps. Thank God I did. My turtles woul dhave been dead. The basking temp was up really high ( I won't say how high) and my previous water temp therm. had croaked. The water temp was even up to about 88. The little guys are still living and doing fine right now, though. I am still monitoring everything at the moment, though.

I'm so glad you went and got a thermometer. It just goes to prove the point that no matter how we try, we can't verify the correct temps on our own (touch).

Keep an eye on them and continue lowering the temps and monitoring the temps daily. :)

Thanks... I am glad too.

My heater that was set on 76-78 kept alternating on and off and the LCD on the side of the tank(mounted correctly) said 78-80. Now it says 74 and the Digi just broke into 79.9. The Digital was a cheap $9.00 therm with a probe from lowes but I feel pretty sure it is rather accurate. The external temp is reading 76, I am in a room that is noticably hotter and we keep our house air at 74, which is what the house air therm says.

I was successful in getting the temp to drop to 79.6 by using a gradual icing method... It has been steady for a while at the same temp when tested at the surface in 3 different places and about 3/4 of the way down in the water column in 3 different places.

I checked the turts and they responded to my stimulus so they are still alive and do okay at the moment. I am happy and they are asleep so I will be going to get some sleep before work at 7 am tomorrow, or today...

New UPDATE...

The water temp was 78.5 this morning and it was staying constant for the little bit of time I was at home this morning. I am leaving the heater unplugged as our ambient air temp is 74-76 degrees so the water can't drop below that. If worse comes to worst they will still be in the comfort range for the adult turt. I know it isn't ideal but they should be able to adapt a couple of degrees I would think. Now, if I can just get a darn incandescent bulb that I can work with to regulate the basking temp.

My ESU reptile Bi-light is coming in today. hopefully I can get it regulated with that lamp set up.
