Not knowing which end that piece came out of, makes it more difficult to guess at what it is. I once had a turtle that had an intestional prolapse once, and it looked somewhat similar to what I saw in the picture, but it was attached to my turtle. There is nothing else coming from the mouth or cloaca?
If you plan to show that piece to the vet, I'd keep it moist and in a small plastic bag in the fridge.
I'd try to calm down and work on finding an emergency clinic (at least look). If your turtle is not in distress, I'd keep an eye on him as you said you were doing. No one can tell you anything about him dying/his prognosis, since no one is sure of what it is.
If your turtle starts to show signs of distress, I would put him in some clean water and turn out the lights. He will fall asleep in the dark. (This is what I did with my turtle.)
