Hi, i just got an plastic tank for my turtle, and it's less than 10 gallons, and it doesn't say a gallon number on it, just "Medium". It seems roomy for him since he small. Is this living space ok for him? And how many months will it be til he grows out of this smaller tank?
Recommended minimum tank size is 10 gallons per inch of turtle... so if your turtle is any where over an inch in length this is already too small. We recommend going as large of a tank as you can now since it will save money in the end from having to upgrade each time he grows. Eventually you are looking at having a 90-120 gallon habitat so plan ahead.
RES need large habitats with plenty of water and swimming space in captivity to live healthy happy lives. Small containers/habitats will not allow you to properly regulate the water and basking temps and water qualtiy which are all important in keeping your RES healthy.
Thanks. Since i spent alot of money on him already, i think i'll make one upgrade to the largest tank when he grows out of this one. Will he still grow if the tank is small? When i bought him at chinatown i expected him to stay small, lol. The people there give you no info on them. I had to do alot of research. Im feel bad for all the turtles that will die, due to peoples lack of knoledge. =(.
He will still grow as long as he has the proper heating, water and basking temps and a healthy diet. I'm glad that you are doing your research to give him a good life.
