Post Posted: Thu Feb 01, 2007 12:30 pm   Hi everyone :) Proud new RES owner new to your site....

G'day from the Far East,

I'm a new RES owner in the city of lights of Hong Kong. I just wanted to introduce myself and my brand new buddy SAMMY LING LING :)

I've read a few posts on this message board as well as the general care section... i think this site is AWESOME!! I think SAMMY likes it too, particularly the feeding section as i've been trying to follow it and my buddy seems to be enjoying his meals (well most of them anyway - still not keen on veges but he's young - his carapace is about 1.5 inches - how old is that actually?) I noticed that pics are enjoyed here so i'd like to share a few. But first a bit of history.

My previous girlfriend had a turtle which she kept in a little plastic container. Seeing the poor little fella had no room to swim (at that time i thought all turtles were mostly aquatic - i learnt more once i read a bit about them) i decided to get her a small tank for her pet. Anyhow, we parted (myself and the girl) and i mentioned to my family that i was keen on getting a turtle as a pet. Time went by and last Xmas day (2006) my family gave me a tiny little turtle for Xmas as a present. He came in a little container with a floating log. After much agonizing my beloved sister found him (her??) a name. It's a long story but the name stuck. So here he is (my Xmas RES - born into my fam on Xmas day 2006) - SAMMY LING LING!!!

He is currently living in a 260 litre tank with 3 basking spots, UVB lights, several live freshwater plants, 5 guppies and 20 gangster fish (i don't know the species - but they're a mob of scallywags). Please give plenty of tips on how i can make his environment more comfortable and natural - this is all new to me but i must say i'm thoroughly enjoying it. I'd love to upload some pics but not sure how - will do once i've figured it out - nighty night....

Greetings from Texas in the USA! Sounds like little Sammy has lots of companions. As he grows up, they will undoubtedly make good snacks!

I look forward to learning more about your setup. If you haven't already, read up on all the good general information on this site, then you'll have more specific questions.

Welcome to the forum! If you haven't read all the stickies on the forum, they are great for advice and helpful hints/tips. I wouldn't know how old your little Sammy is. Zeke is 6 years old and 7" long.

Not really exactly sure of the ratios but i think 260l is about 70 gallons.... hopefully it will be enough space but i guess much depends on how big he/she grows. Hahaha - it's weird that i've been calling SAMMY 'him' this whole time, i'm not entirely sure, he could very well be a 'her' :?:

You never know. I knew a guy with a RES named Lulu. Well, Lulu grew up to be a boy, but they never changed his name. Lulu didn't mind.

Sammy Ling Ling,,,LOL,,,i love it.

Warm welcomes to the site from the bittercold state of Massachusetts USA. LOL.

Just so you know, you can back to any of your original posts and EDIT or even DELETE it i believe, That way u dont have 3 or 4 posts full of mistakes.
You can even PREVIEW the post before you SUBMIT it to see if its gonna look how u wanted it too. No worries, youll get the hang of it.
See u and Sammy around.
Lord,
Grant me the serenity to accept the things i cannot change.
The courage to change the things that I can.
And the wisdom to know the difference.
