i have 3 turtles and the other day i got a 4th one from freinds becuase it has shell rot so bad im surprised its not dead - like thier 2nd that died last month. any way i know how to treat her and have her separated so mine dont get it but i noticed she has trouble eating and around her mouth is very white and crusty looking - is this linked to the rot or is it something else - if so how do i fix it?

you should have a vet check her out first. she could be harboring parasites and disease, which would not be surprising since your friends don't seem to know what they are doing.

she is probably suffering mouth rot and a vitamin deficiency. this is a possible viral or bacterial infection and she needs to see a vet... it is not something you should treat by yourself.

It possibly could be mouth rot, which can be quite serious. You need to take your turtle to a herp vet. If you don't have/know of one, try to find one from the links in the post on locating vets in the Urgent Care Forum.

thank you for your help. We went to the vet, she has mouth rot , i have to take her to the vet everday for a antibiotic injection for the next week.
i also have to keep her out of her water for most of the day just putting her in for 1/2 - 1 hour to re-hydrate - which should help her mouldy rotten shell.

good to hear she's getting proper treatment. considering the seriousness of mouth rot, i wouldn't want to put her in with the other turts for at least 6 months after she is completely healed. that might just be me though...

I know what you mean, My nephews were playing with the turtles outside and I was taking a nap (much deserved one :D ), when they came in, they were talking about the turtles, they sounded worried, (well, my neice was, my nephew just sat down to play nintendo) I asked what was wrong and she told me that one turtle was missing, so we looked around for about 20 minuits all over the front yard and could not find him, I finally found him under my car (parked on the grass), I had looked there before but had not seen him, I had to feel for him with my arm and finally felt a bump in the grass and there he was (whew!), I put him back and all went back to normal. :D :D That was a heck of a scare. :D

that reminds me of my kittens when I was a little kid. My cat had a litter, and they kittens would jump on top of the wheels of the vehicles (5 in total) in my driveway, and a few of them got run over. :(

my turts always run around with me outside - i never leave them, if the phone rings i just dont answer it.
they love it they pick up daisys out of the grass and run around looking for water to eat it.
i just dont really know how contagious mouth rot is??
