Habitat - Outdoor :: Filter recomendations for 100 Gallon Rubbermaid Stock Tank

Hello All -

This is my first post, but I've been an active reader for quite some time now and have learned so much about RES's from everyone. Thanks for the information!

I am planning to purchase a 100 gal Rubbermaid stock tank for our 1 year old RES and am looking for filter recommendations. My goal is to place the tank outdoors on our porch for the summer months and inside (probably the basement) for the winter months. We live in upstate NY.

I've read about priming problems with the XP3 canister filters. I'd prefer not th place the tank on blocks or anything, but that may be the way to go to keep it off of a cold basement floor in the winter.

Any help or sharing about similar set-ups is greatly appreciated!

Hi, you might have recently read about my problem regarding the XP3 on a 100 gallon stock tank. It can work (it did for me) and should be easier to setup outside. I was being very careful about water spills and leaks inside, so it should work much better in an outside environment.

I'm looking into other filters, but need to take a couple of measurements. I'll let you know if I get to try something else!

You could also look into a pond filter that uses a pump inside the tank to pump water up to a filter box that's placed above the tank off to the side so the clean water can flow back into the pond/tank like a waterfall. you could also make your own that way. It looks something like this...

a canister filter like a xp3 or something of that kind could work...i wouldn't recommend a hanging waterfall filter because its hard to be sure what kind of lip that tanks gonna have, it might not even fit

the 100 gallon rubbermaid stock tank has a lip of 1 3/4", the Aquaclear 110 has a gap of 1 3/8 so it defiantly won't fit unless you can shave off some of that lip. Maybe there can be a work-around, like a flap that would allow the Aquaclear to sit firmly on that stock tank.

Marisa, I like your idea (and your name as well-that's what we named our baby girl, now 1 1/2 yrs. old and also a turtle lover). I just purchased a Pondmaster 190 after reading some additional posts.
