General Care Discussion :: This really made me mad

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Ok, so I went to one of those websites where they sell 2-headed turts & turts with no eyes, just to educate myself on how ignorant people can really be. I read thru their generic care sheet & hit the point where they talked about water temperature. They said that the water can be 75 degrees during warm months, and can drop down into the 60s and even high-50s during the winter months for most species (!).

First off, I know it is very wrong they are selling these poor unfortunate 2-headed sliders online. Not sure what we can do about these kinds of sales going on, but the idea that they would be telling people to keep turtles in water that is in the low 60s (in addition to other inaccurate things on that care sheet) just angered me. It sticks in my craw that my first 2 turtles died of pneumonia 18 yrs ago because the water was a very cold 62 degrees all winter long & I didn't know any better. Back then, there was no information. Now, the good information is so easy to get & there is NO excuse!!!!

So I called the place up, and very pleasantly told them that they need to change their care sheet to keep the water always above 70 degrees minimum. The guy told me that I was wrong, their care sheet did not say that. I read it to him word for word and asked him if he would please change it. Then the guy on the other end basically just hung up on me!!!

So do yourselves a favor, folks, don't buy from these "illegal" turtle websites. I know it has been said before, but they don't care about their animals. They only care about the money they make off the unsuspecting buyer.

Kristin,

First I want to say thanks so much for all of your kind words!!! You've really helped me out a lot.

As far as the post...

There is a lot of bad information out there. I'm one of those people who research everything. So, I was online the morning after getting Squirt trying to find all the info. All the websites I read that first day said to keep him in enough water so he can turn over if he ends up upside down and made no mention of a heater! Then I found all of you!!!!!!!!!!!

RES owners that have healthy turtles despite not having the proper set up are very fortunate. I know I don't have much experience, but I know what can go wrong. And I definitely know how much it can cost you!!! Financially and emotionally! It's a real shame when someone makes every effort to give a turtle the best possible life they can only to have it cut short because of someone elses lack of... what? Knowledge? Sense? Heart? I know people have to make a living but how much does fresh water cost???? A heater is only $20. If the average cost of a hatchling is $7 I still see a HUGE profit!!!!

Hopefully this site will stay in the foreground and continue to be a valuable resource to all turtle owners. I know it is for me!

If sellers gave out correct information on turtle care, then no one would buy them. I mean, who would buy them if they said, oh it'll cost about $300 for the set up and you'll need a 75 gallon tank.

The first words censored on this site was that site's address. They also sell "B Grade" RES at a discount... makes me sick.

They are inventory that needs to be sold before they become large and expensive... and less cute.

let's all make PETA aware of this.
From the homegrowers soul, straight to his lungs. That's the method that I myself find fun. Start from seed and then you'll see, just how fun homegrowing can be.
