Just got these yesterday......
I had no idea that spotties were such horrible swimmers! When i put them in the tank yesterday, they were swimming so strong, but not moving towards the surface of the water. I had to grab them and take them out and lowered the water level to about 6" to have piece of mind that they won't drown.

Well these are 08 hatchlings, but the reason everyone gets baby turtles now, is because the 09's hatched over the summer, so you buy them now before it gets too cold to ship. Not everyone uses styrofoam boxes and heating packs :)

OMG you punk, you are so freakin' lucky. I loved spotteds so much.

Do you have any photos of their setup? I have this delusion that I want a spotted someday, so I need ideas for the 50% land, 50% water type setup. I want it to be natural looking, and not like a tortoise enclosure.

Oh yeah, they SUCK at swimming. What I've heard is that their water level should be as high as the length of their shell. Which is technically a good thing and a bad thing, cause you can get a shallow breeder tank, but you need a submersible filter that works in water only a few inches high. Most filters I've seen that work in shallow water, really can't keep up with turtle waste.

You know what i learned about spotted turtles yesterday that i didnt know and found interesting? It was in the November 2009 Reptiles magazine.

Spotted turtles are born with only one spot per scute and as they grow more spots appear. Though they can go there whole life only getting the orginal spots there born with. It should a pic of two adults. One with lots of spots and one with a one spot per scute and i gotta say it wasnt very neat looking. just thought id share that.
