I helped Spike out the same way last week. She had a few that were just too much for me to avoid pulling a little to see if I could get them. They did come right off.

Nice turtles, wow 16+ years old! about the edge of the shell, I heard on this forum before, that it is a sign of over-feeding? if the shell gets jagged in the edge, is it true or not mine is staring to get jagged in the edge as well...

Which of the pics were you comparing your turtle's shell to?

Frankie looks much better with those old scutes off. I would have been popping the loose ones off a while ago---my fingers get itching when I see scutes hanging like that. :D

Jben - I remember someone on this forum said that rapid growth (likely from over feeding) can cause the jagged scutes at the back.

Lol, Marisa, I did try before, but they didn't want to budge, and I was so afraid of hurting her. It had been several months since I gave them a test though.
She looks like a whole new turtle with her new scutes :D

Wow! What an amazing change! She looks so much cleaner now. I'm glad you didn't wait any longer, they must have been driving her crazy.

Posted an update here:
http://www.redearslider.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26334

I think I've got about 90% or more of the old scutes off (including on her plastron). The back marginals are going to be tricky... I haven't tried them again yet. Thought I'd wait til she's nice and dry, then take her outside, THEN try those stubborn ones again :)

It also looks like she might even be getting ready to shed again, so I'm hoping this round will all come off naturally, and take the bits of scutes I couldn't get off with them.

If Frankie was any more relaxed, she'd be in a coma! :P Actually, she's been a bit more wary of me when she's up basking if I put my hands near her. After "the big itch" when I first got most of the old scutes off, I haven't seen her itching since.
