I have a little homemade curtain that I made out of a pillowcase that I pull around the tank (actually just the front and then I use another for the sides. They sleep as soon as I pull the curtains although Chimpy usually has been sleeping a while even with the lights on (Chimpy is a heavy sleeper).

yes, indeed i missed out the question! my apologies!
as for the basking light, i'm using philip's superlux 40W and 60W (about RM 1.50 if i recall) you can also try osram 40W and 60w, which is also cheaper. as for the lamp holder itself, try to get those rated for 60W (Ikea has one) or those with ceramic base holder, otherwise the plastic will melt.
distance about 12 to 16 inches away from basking area. i switch on mine from 9am to 1pm, 2pm to 6pm, 7pm to 10pm using a timer for both basking light and UV light.
in nature itself, i'm not too sure, but i've noticed that whenever there are no lights, they'll sleep. they're quite a light sleeper too. from caresheets that i've read, most of the time they recommend 12/12 hours cycle. but it also depends on where you place your turtle. if it's in the living room with the lights on till 1am, they'll still be awake...
