I actually tried chicken wire, he would try to wedge himself through the openings and it looked like he was going to chop his head off!

well that soudns scary, plywood it is, maybe ill just make a cover with chicken wire.
Do you ever worry about predators messing with him while hes in there or do you just watch him?

Defiantly don't let your turtle get tangled up in fencing or netting, he/she will freak out.

The main predators to watch out for are raccoons. A cover should be effective for birds and cats, probably dogs too. Raccoons are a different story. Since they are nocturnal, they shouldn't be a concern during the day. If you do spot them, then you will need to closely supervise your RES.

anytime i let kaya walk around the backyard all of the nieghborhood birds gather in the tree in my yard and start getting very loud, like theyre just waiting for me to let my gaurd down. ive been thinking about taking out my paintball gun for turtle defense, lol.

Nice pics. :D . My backyard already has walls built to seperate it from the neighbor's yards and we don't have raccoons.
Kinda random question :? but, how do male RES walk? Do they knuckle walk or something, like a platypus? Cause their nails are really long, and I see how my turt's nails kinda dig into the ground when she walks(and their relatively short compared lol). Just wondering since I see his nails and how long they are  .

I don't have a cover on mine, but I hang out outside with him while basking.

@sora- he walks with his nails foreword, flat footed. :D
