Hah! I saw a special on Animal Planet called the future is wild, and they seem to think that it will be cephalopods related to squids that evolve as the next "intelligent animals".

Interesting! But they'll have to find a way to overcome the problem of not having an internal skeleton. Kind of makes it hard for them to do any heavy lifting or to do things like swing a hammer!
