Nice RES, does he/she have a name?

I can't help you with sex, sorry

But if you want to know the sex of your turtle, check out the hole on the underside. A turtles defecates out of the same hole it's genetials reside in, so there will only be one. IIRC, a male's will be closer to the body than a female's. From the front claws though, I'd guess you've got a girl. Ever found eggs in your tank, or a big black thing hanging out of the back of your turtle?

Looks like a female. Spike got it backwards, a male's cloaca is farther away from
the body than a female's. A male's tail looks bigger too. More definite sign is
the much longer nails at the front feet.

Your turtle looks like having pyramiding. The shell should be smooth, not bumpy.
Other than that, it looks healthy.

My suggestion is not to breed RES, unless you want to keep them all. RES is
overpopulated already. One year old RES is not mature enough to breed.

Correct the diet. Start offering more veggies, you can follow the guidelines here:
http://www.redearslider.com/plants.html

For pellets, give the amount equal to the size of the head without the neck once
every two days. If you want to feed daily, just half that amount. Offer veggies
and cuttlebone daily.

Basking under UVB is important for the turtle to process vitamin D. Getting the
top and bottom shell to dry several times daily is important to prevent fungus.
Hopefully after several sheds the shell will smooth out.

Correcting the diet is important for the turtle to avoid getting bone and health
problems later on.

Yes, just break the cuttlebone to headsize chunks.

Is your female RES basking under a good UVB light? Without sufficient Vit D in the diet (which is metabolized from UVB rays), calcium will not be utilized.

Anyways, the short nails say your turtle is a female. Males have well, Freddy Kruger claws XD

Other ways to tell males and females apart:

1. Males have longer snouts and long, fat tails, female have short snouts and shout tails.
2. A male's plastron is curved inward, female have flat plastrons.
3. Males don't grow larger than 9 inches, female grow up to 12 inches.

well...everyone had given their comments :) mine is also the same, it's a girl and having pyramiding.

Good luck with fixing the diet...I've been in the same situation with yours. My kame also has pyramiding before I find this forum :)
