I seem to recall yet another one mentioned on here quite some time ago. The one in this picture looks quite healthy. The one on the Letterman show was bigger and older and had a somewhat deformed shell. They don't usually survive very long.

I wonder about how it eats. Do both heads have to eat or does one do the eating for the both of them?

Zoiks. The sad reality of 2-headed bred turtles is that a breeder may end up breeding many many healthy babies that they just throw away. A 2-headed slider can be worth $400 each, whereas the healthy 1-headed babies are only about $10-$15/each so they don't make any money off the healthy ones. Many times the breeders just throw away the healthy ones in lieu of the 2 headed ones since they are just trying to make money off the animals.

The hatchling I have is actually one of almost 200 rescued babies from a cold winter river in Philadelphia. George from this board happened to be walking by the river & saw all the babies in that icy water back in Dec. 06. Since RES's don't hatch in the middle of winter, we suspect they were just *dumped* by some uncaring breeder, possibly one of the breeders that breeds 2-headed sliders, or sliders with "no eyes" ("no eye" sliders are also one of the many bred "abuses" of RES's). George & Mybrosteve from this board have been caringly adopting the "found babies" out to people in the area (including myself since I adopted one too).

Sorry to sound so sad about this but I just hate it when people do inconsiderate things to animals & everyone needs to spread the word!

I consider my "discarded" hatchling baby ("Siobhan") a real blessing in my life & baby has been very healthy, growing, eating a ton, & doing well! I've had him now for 5 weeks & he has grown 1/2 inch. He's so sweet, I can't imagine anyone throwing such a sweetie away, but some people are just cruel.

what's a no-eyed slider look like? no eyes period or just the markings?

yeah i've heard about those turtle farms throwing out healthy babies in favour of the mutants. makes me sick. that two headed one looks cute, though.

I saw that site from what I read they were born that way not purposely made that way. Well they may have bred the parents puropsely with the gene for no eyes.

Normal RES hatchlings are probably sold from a farm for 25¢ and up. Thats why so many places still sell them for a few dollars and can profit off that while most of them die.

That turtle site even sells "B Grade" RES at a discount. Unbelievable.

Oh my GOSH what would be the apeal to breeding eyeless turtles. I just dont get people that do that kind of stuff.

its just like siamese twins.. birth defects. Two turtle sperm probably fertilized two eggs, and they stuck together. I dont think its like human eggs, where they split.
