Here are some pics I took yesterday. Finally got the weeds whacked down and setup up a water area outside for the girls!

And the girls trying to manage an escape over the indoor barrier I set up to keep them out of the kitchen / laundrey room:

They never did succeed, hehe.

Actually I haven't changed the water yet. I just use my net to get the weeds out. I keep a lid on it when the girls aren't outside.

Well, my thinking is, and I'm sure someone will come along and correct me if I'm wrong, that for this application a filter is not necessary.

They don't spend all their time in there, they just get in and out when they want to cool off. They aren't eating in there, and probably aren't peeing much in there. The water is going to get dirty (with dirt) before ammonia levels or anything else rise. So, I am just going to keep the weeds out of it, and when it gets dirty, I'll change the water.

I want to leave the water in it as long as possible so I don't always have to wait for the temp to rise, that takes about a day. But, I don't think a filter is necessary.

I don't think a filter is necessary either, it's not like it's their permanent home or anything. And it's so easy to dump the water and fill it back up.

greek-if you are using that as a permanent home for your turltes you might want to think about getting a filter, you will have to change the water pretty frequently otherwise, especially if you feed them in the tank.

Oh ok....then a filter may be necessary. You don't live in an area that could have predators going after them do ya?

My girls just go out for a couple hours in the afternoon, that's why I wasn't worried about it. Their permanent home is a tank inside.

They pose a BIG danger to turtles.
I've heard of raccoons climbing up apartment balconies to get at turtles who are in small pools to chuck them down the building and eat them...

This afternoon while Spot was out in the backyard walking around a couple of tufted titmice went after him! It was kind of funny - I guess they thought he was a snake - but I was afraid he'd get pecked and took him in.
