I thought the turtle was a RES but apparently he doesn't have the red ear. I've never seen a shell like that. It looks very smooth and well usually I see either a dark colored shell or dark/colored looking shell on other older RES. Maybe I just dont know that much about them yet, although I've searched through a lot of threads on here and never saw a shell like that (or redless ear). The turtle does look cool, though.

The reddish areas remind me of a Western Painted Turtle, though the colors on your turtle are not as vivid. How big is she? Adult female RES are about 10"-12", painteds are usually smaller than that.

Aren't the cuora family more land turtles(box) though?

I think we have a winner!!!!

I looked this species up in Google, and they look dead on to me!

I know the colors are more vibrant, but when he was younger he had more coloring....I think....The only picturs I have when he was younger were taken by me and they were all out of focus because I was 10 and didn't know how to work a camera.

But the shape and patterns match....I think this one might be it!! :)

I'll get a picture of his bottom, and measurements later today...It's still early morning, and he's still sleeping.

can you get a pic of his claw/tail and plastron (bottom of the shell)? Looks to me like some kind of painted turtle.

Well, here is what the bottom of his shell looks like, and his "measurements".

This weekend I will be looking into getting him a new tank...A larger one, since as you can see, he's quite large himself, as he's larger than most turtles I've seen that people own...He's approx 6 1/2 inches from the rear of his shell to the front...That's not counting tail or head & neck.

I'll be looking into other upgrades as well, but I'll post those in the habitat section.

After seeing the last pic, I definitely agree that he looks like a painted. Now why couldn't you have posted that one first? ;) lol

Looks like a "he" to me as well.

Hi does puddles have or ever had a redish Plastron? If so I would say its a western/painted turtle or another it could be is a chicken turtle? From your pics I thouhgt I could see a hint of a reddish/orange on the plastron but I could just be colour blind.

I think "he" is adorable! Glad to hear about other turtles that are "older". I've had mine for 16+ yrs, and she is definitely a SHE (has laid eggs many times in the past).

It's hard to see the front paws to see the length of the fingernails. If his front nails are very long, then he is definitely a HE. Boys also have a longer thicker tail than the girls.

Your Buddy looks great! I would guess a yellow-ear slider.
