 I've been a victim, too.
Just be careful. Yeah, it's mighty fun to take pictures of your turtles and show 'em off here. But flash hurts their sensitive eyes. Get a camera that doesn't flash and take your pictures in the daytime. Unless you want to risk having a blind turtle.

I've always used the flash with mine otherwise I can't take pics. It's never seemed to affect him. Something about my digital camera makes the pics all fuzzy if the flash isn't on even outside.

I don't like to use a flash because it washes out the color. If you use it further away, it should be OK though it won't help light your picture ;)

Turning the flash off increases the risk for having a blurry photo. If you turn it off to take a pic, you have to be sure that you hold the camera perfectly still.

I personally don't like to use flash just because it takes away natural lighting from turtle and its environment.
I usually just turn to Auto mode and turn off the flash when I take picture of my turtle when he's standing still, however, I have to find a surface to put my digital camera onto or try not to move my hand, and when he's moving, I usually turn to fast action mode and turn off the flash, and it turns out pretty good.
I would suggest to have enough light source around the turtle when taking photographs that would definitly help a lot.(such as basking lamp)
hope this help :)

(however, the result may depend on the kind of digital camera you have, mine's Canon S20, quite old digital camera)

If you use a flash very close to a turtle, you can indeed damage their eyes. But using it from across the room will not hurt them.

That said, flash makes pictures crappy. Pictures without flash look better.

Missi- flash really hasn't anything to do with blur- I think that's your imagination.

If you manually turn off the flash on certain cameras, the camera's auto exposure will keep the shutter open longer to compensate for the lack of light, which will cause blurring. If your camera has manual controls, you can change some settings to take a clearer picture.

Well, I have worked as a model for many years, and as a photographer quite recently. If you are getting blur from not using the flash, then you a)don't have your camera adjusted properly and/or b)do not have proper lighting.

Most pro photographers prefer to work without flash because it eliminates depth and gives a less than optimum result.
