Image

I haven't been on the boards in awhile but I just thought I'd drop in to bring the news. As Veronica has hit her first birthday, I have finally brought myself to look for her sex characteristics.

All characteristics point to male.

I can't bring myself to rename her...him.

Aside from the surprise of the sex, she/he's been doing very well over the past year. I recently moved and she made the move quite fine. As she hits four inches I'm about to move her from her 30 gallon to a 55.

They grow up fast don't they? I remember just a year ago when she was a tiny little baby. Ahh. When HE was a baby. I just can't adjust to the boy thing.

Being a male turtle isn't entirely a bad thing. The males have those cool front toenails. Real conversation starters. And they don't have those pesky eggs. Egg laying necessitates all sorts of habitat adjustments. And the males don't get nearly as big. You can get by with a huge tank, won't have to have a gigantic tank!

At any rate, Veronica's a doll.

Yep, I'd have to agree.. for a change being a male isn't a bad thing.. (no I'm not a male hater.. I have 3 sons and 2 grandsons... ) As SpotsMama said, no eggs to deal with and the upgrades etc.. :)

Haha yeah. The first thing I thought of when I realized she was a boy was that it would save in the whole egg laying and size thing.

My only adjustment is that um..her name is Veronica. My roommates and I have just been calling her V lately.

How about after three years did I realize my baby boy Cortez was in fact a GIRL! I always thought her nails were sooo long. But when I got on this website I saw pictures of other male turtles and knew that there was a big difference in nail size.

Well now I know why Cortez likes to redecorate so much!
THANKS!

I knew a guy with two turtles named Lulu and something masculine - Fred I think. After awhile, he realized he had the sexes reversed. But by then everybody was accustomed to the names so he never changed them. The turtles didn't mind at all.

I'm actually a HUGE Vin Diesel fan. Entire Vin movie collection sitting right beside me haha.

But...switching names would be so hard. I have a hamster that's a female and has a boy name. So I'll just live with gender switched pet names lol.

buffy, I know it feels weird.. I thought my turt was a boy, and it turns out shes a girl... it was a really weird feeling. Kinda like if you were cheated on or had been lied to... lol.... But now shes my little girl, I couldnt imagine her being a boy anymore. hehe :)

can you post a pick of his claws and tail? you said as soon as he hits four inches... how many inches is he now? you usually cannot tell until 4 inches, but if he is almost there, you are right then...

Yeah he's around four inches. I haven't done an exact measurement. It was actually really weird. I was just laying in bed with my roommates watching Gilmore Girls and I looked over at the tank and just said out of nowhere, "Veronica is a boy.". And after all three of us did inspections we all agreed on her being a male.

I don't think Vin Diesel has any fans. :) What about Verne?

I am the one Vin Diesel fan in the world, I admit. He's like comfort food for me. When I'm sick or in a bad mood I just pop in a Vin film. You have to admit Pitch Black is actually pretty good.

Verne is just not acceptable. Calling him V right now is working. I could just switch my pet names. My female hamster can be renamed Veronica and the turt can be renamed Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

That's too confusing. V it is.

Now I know why non-gender specific names are the way to go with turtles lol.

OK, end of discussion. BTW, I liked Pitch Black, but not because of his role. Verne was from the author Jules Verne... but nevermind :) ... what about Jules? Heheh, OK, now I really give up.

Regardless, you have a nice-looking turtle. :) I was secretly thrilled when I found out my RES was a male (but wouldn't have thought any of the less of him had it turned out otherwise). In fact, all the turtles here are males. I'm surrounded by males...
