I wonder how much longer it'll take before she realizes she can't fit underneath those bars.

The setup looks awesome! I know that the gravel in the tank isnt small enough for your turtle to swallow. But all those rocks can foul the water alot faster and they tend to hold in alot of debri (poop, skin, etc). A few river rocks spread on the bottom is fine, but all those rocks arent all the neccesary. Trust me, take those rocks out for a couple of weeks and notice how much less water changes you will have to do, :)

By the way, your turtle looks beautiful. I've always wanted a YBS. :D

Your turtle is adorable! So sincere! That's funny that he's surfing on his cuttlebone!

A word of warning:

From time to time a little turtle gets stuck behind the bars of that basking dock and can't get loose and drowns. To make it safer, turn the bars upside down so the horizontal bar is at the top, above water, and then take off the suckers on the ends that are below the water. This will make the bars a lot more flexible so the turtle can get loose if he needs to.

I love the look of that big coral-type structure in the middle but when your turtle gets just a little bit bigger he's going to get stuck in there as well. If it were me I'd take it out.

One reason the little turtle probably likes to go behind the bars of his dock is that he likes to hide. It makes him feel safe. As an alternative, you could put a big plastic plant in there. Lot's of turtles like to hide in a plant - even my big 4-year old does it.

My turtles would try to get behind those bars all the time! Mine of course didn't drown. But I'd deffenitly be on the look out. Could be risky

instead of worrying about that, i just got the corner dock, it keeps the bars out of the water so they are safe turts of mine!

i love the tank, i love the turtle. quite the cutie!

that picture there where he's hanging out in the bar makes me uneasy. my aeryn got stuck (just like that as a matter of fact) like that TWICE. i agree flip the bar over and take the suction cups off the bottom. i hate that thing. my dock is now tucked under a ramp, no bars or suction cups involved, and the bar is what my silk ivy is wrapped around. still no suction cups on the bottom.

I would take that thing, flip it around, so that the black bar is on top instead of below the deck. Many people on this site do it, it doesnt effect the dock, and its safer.

Thanks for the tip Savingsaturday, I'll remove those today. Where do you find the larger river rocks? I've been looking at the setup gallery here for some idea's on decorating the tank. Once it's really setup I'll post another pic.
Thanks, we think she is too! :D I never realized I could fall in love with a reptile till my dd begged us for them. Even though it's a lot more work and I'm still learning, she pretty much became mine and I watch her constantly. Dh says I've become obsessessed...I think he's just jealous.

Thanks Spotsmama, I'll do that this morning when I take the rocks out. I've been watching her like a hawk since I read here that they can actually drown. I wasn't worried because she can't fit under there but if she gets any stronger and tries she might just get stuck. Glad there's a way to fix that! It's funny that you mention that rock, we actually bought it for the hermies to crawl on but Crush was having a hard time when she first went into the bigger tank and couldn't hardly swim to the top so I put that in her tank instead, to use to climb up and push herself to the dock and it worked. Ofcourse she's such a strong swimmer now she doesn't need it anymore so I'll take it out. I would be worried sick that might happen. I'll be getting plants soon. It's a work of progress with my husband right now, he's still in shock over the tank/stand.lol I'll pick little things up along the way to make it more fun for Crush.
Thanks also to Pumpkinsherbert, turboturtle and hoooneylynn! Once the tank is looking better, I'll post more pics.

Great pics! I'd say those top two are photo-contest worthy!

Yea, that top one definitely is. It reminds me of Apocolypse Now for some strange reason. :?

Dave, I think you're thinking of this shot from Apocalypse Now:

(I wish I knew how to get an image like this to show on here. Is there an easy way?)

Ya, that's it! Very intense movie. Totally changed my boyhood image of war. I used to think it was all glamorous and heroics. But all the little side glimpses of the war that they showed going on around the main characters was pretty disturbing.

If you want to display the image, you need to right click the mouse over the picture, go to properties, highlight and copy the url of the image, then paste it into your post and then put a [img] tag in front of the address and a [/url] closing tag at the end of it. :)

Yes, Apocalype Now was a landmark movie. Got to be on any top 10 or top 50 list. But I thought Redux was a mess.

You know, for your example all I can see is a little box with a red x in it. Anyway, I tried what you suggested with the AN image but couldn't get anythihng to come up with a right click. They've probably got it protected so it can't be used.
