Thanks to the info on this site and the great advice from you experts I think I finally did it!
I removed all the water cleaned his tank, removed his rock, moved the tank away from the window to the other side of the room. Taking a tip from the care section, instead of refilling the tank with warm water I used cold and let the heater heat it and tah dah! The water is still crystal clear!
Squirt loves it, I love it! He seems happier and the filter is working so much better without all that other stuff in it.
His tank is a little bare but I'll get him some more stuff when we get the bigger tank.
