Another poll... do you think you are smarter because of your turtles? I'm not referring to turtle-specific facts and husbandry information, but smarter in general and in the way you do other things.

Definitely. Anytime I get an idea of something cool to do, I always make sure and look it up first. I didn't do any research (besides talking to the vender) before buying Mikey... It wasn't smart at the time, by any means, but it turned out okay Now, I'm more careful about those things.

But seriously, I think I am. At the very least I'm more aware of what goes on around me.

Oh I've learned never to trust stereotypes, since keeping turtles in small tanks with gravel and a big rock is a very old stereotype and almost everyone believes it.

My turtle is lively but there is also a calm about him. He's very focused and persistant - once he decides on something he keeps at it and at it until in the end, he usually gets what he wants. There's a myth about a turtle that wins a race with a hare because, even though he's slow, he never quits. He's going to live a long, long time so he doesn't have to rush. In his slow, deliberate way, he learns things, like that I'm his friend. If we can live more like our turtles, we'll be better off. Our turtles can teach us life lessons.

I have to say that I think we might be about even. I know that their survival instincts are better and more finely honed that mine. I also know that emotions don't interfere with choices for them at all, which means that the choices that they make are always based on their own needs and wellfare. They do learn to recognize patterns of behavior and faces. They use the info to get fed. I do also have to point out, that they are the one being served by us, not the other way around. Until DavidY starts breeding cyborg turtle servants in the future, i think we are on level ground.

I don't know that I'm 'smarter', but I've learned that I enjoy research through the process of learning how to care for my boys and such things as finding a vet. And I have become a firm believer in 'if you can't afford the vet, you can't afford the pet'. I take being a pet owner much more seriously than I did a year ago.
