gday all. i have an 8 year old male turtle that i bought from those chinese fairs. ( you know the ones you buy when they are less than 4ins) well anyhoo he's getting pretty big, and i have the sudden urge to grab another turtle.
where i live it seems hard to find female sliders, every pet store i go to i see males only. is there anyway to find a place to get female res in san francisco?
also i was always under the impression that turtles liked to be alone. if i get another turtle would they still be happy? im about to transfer him into a 55gallon rubber maid tub.
and if i buy another one of those baby turtles, would it be ok for the baby to stay with my current turtle. its pretty big.
thanks all!

How big is your male? If you get another turt, you'll have to quarantine it for 90 days to make sure it doesn't have any illnesses or parasites that will make your other turtle sick. Once you introduce them, there's no guarantee they'll get along so be prepared to have 2 full setups. Also, if they're going to be kept together, you'll have to get something MUCH larger than that 55 gal. If your male is 5 inches, that 55 gal is fine but if he's bigger than that, it's too small for him, let alone another turt.

Can't help you on where to find them, as I'm not in the US.

If he has been by himself for 8 years, he is pretty much territorial. I'm not so sure about placing another turt with him, unless you've got a huge, huge habitat. And 55 gallons doesn't cut it. I'm thinking your current turt is about 6-8 inches? He's gonna need at least 80 gallons and with a new turtles... maybe a 200 gallon.
one inch of turt - 10 gallons

And no, you shouldn't place a little one with him, he might bite or squash the baby.

thanks for the replies. i think im over getting another turtle. i was just a bit anxious to get another baby turtle after seeing everyones hatchlings. theyre so damn adorable. hahahaa
:D

yeah my turtle has been living alone for his entire life. we've been through alot. i still remember the day i bought him, it was at the chinese new year parade. i didnt want to get those critter tanks so i asked the lady if i could just buy the turtle? she said yes, and i kept that little guy in my jacket pocket for the entire night. but near the end of the night i noticed he wasnt moving much anymore. he was getting too cold, so i put him in my pant pocket. he came right back to life clawing and everything. luckily by that time i was going home. one of the dumbest things i could have done for sure, but he' happy now.

currently my turtle lives in a 20 gallon temp only. my old 40 gall some how broke. and its finals week for me, so i havent had the time to swap. but i cant wait to switch him. a nice big tank, a new homemade basking spot made from those pvc tubes (thank you for the ideas) and a whole new location. cant wait!
