Other Turtle Discussion :: Not sure what to do about my turtles

Im not sure what Im going to do with my turtles. I plan on moving across country by car and I dont think they can handle the trip. I dont want them to be sold to someone who wont take care of them properly. Help me with some viable options.

How long is the trip? It can be done (though winter is not the best time) and as a last resort there are shipping options...

From Vancouver BC to Ottawa Ontario Canada. It will be during winter thats what Im worried about and the trip is approx. 5 days.

How big are they? I think 5 days maybe stressful but certainly doable. Also, how many turtles do you have and are they all RES?

perhaps you have a local herp-society/shelter. we have one here in the chicago land area. they get all the over grown herps that people can't take care of anymore. they love the animals as well as specialize in only herps.

MARISA this is some great info you provided, i never realized that it was such a difficult task to travel with turtles............now I know and I don't plan on moving very far.

Thanks alot for all your help by the way they are both res and one is a female and the other male. Donatello is 8 inches and Michaelangelo is 6 inches. I will consider taking them however my concern is I am driving a little hatchback not much room for everything.

I hear you on the lack of room in a hatchback--I have an 1973 Volkswagon Beetle, how much room do you think I have?

Hopefully, you'll take the important things, like your turtles. I wouldn't let the info in that article overwhelm you. Most important is to keep the ambient air at a comfortable temp (not too hot or cold) and remember that they need to be hydrated periodically. (Puttling them on a damp towel that has a comfortably warm hot water bottle under it will provide some moist warmth until they can be put in water, ideally about every two hours.) If you keep them in a darkened container, they'll sleep.
