Hi, I'm just trying to be prepared ahead of time and get some ideas regarding how people transport their turtles. Must we keep them pretty warm? How long away from water before it starts to affect them? Appreciate any info.

I transport mine to the vet in a small rubbermaid storage container. It has holes in the top, that I made, to allow for circulation. It's also pretty small, so he can't slide around and possibly get hurt.

They can be away from the water for quite awhile, but if you are going on a car trip of several hours, take a mister bottle with you and mist your turtle occasionally. Then when you get where you are going, put him in water ASAP.

If the weather is cold, then yes, they need to be kept somewhat warm to avoid the risk of illness. They are usually okay at about 70 degrees. Also, keep them out of direct sunlight- they can overheat easily. Don't keep them in temps above 80 or so without being in water.

If it is cold and you must travel with them, keep the car warm and/or use a heat pad or hot towel to keep them warm.
