A couple years ago, Rush's brother, Shadow, died. I did the best I could to save him but I didn't know much about turtles when I was 14. Anyway, I look back on it now and I wonder what happened to him. I was hoping you could help me with my unanswered questions.

We got them at the same time, Shadow was bigger than Rush, and his shell was unusually light in color. I also noticed some silver spots (Not the kind they get when shedding). I set up a nice little home for them in a plastic tub. The water was deep, and we gave them a little basking area too. At first, they didn't eat well, but we eventually coaxed them into it. We fed them krill and tiny Reptomin pellets. In a few days, I realized Shadow's shell was softer than Rush's. I thought maybe he had soft shell, so I kept him in a little cardboard cube with a clean rag on the bottom. I kept him in there for a few hours a day. One day, I found him missing from the cardboard cube. He had escaped! I searched for him all day in my messy room. I looked through the junk under the bed, and under the desk... (You can imagine how clean my room became that day). Untill a few hours later I found him stuck under my closet door. After that, he just became really sluggish, and sometimes refused to open his eyes. I would put him in the water, and he would just squirm a little and float there. I figured, maybe he has some sort of eye infection, so I ask my mom to get turtle eye drops for him. Unfortunalty, he died the next day.

I'm glad I found this site. Now if anything ever happend to Rush, I would know what to do. Thanks for all your help, everyone!

I found this site 2 days after I got my two little RES. I am so glad I did. I knew nothing about turtles - only that I wanted to save a couple from the person selling them at the maket. He probably had 30-40 RES in a bowl, in the hot sun.) I wish I could have saved them all.
Anyway, this site has been a Godsend.

How long after you got them did he die? My feelings would be that maybe he had an illness prior to when you got him. Maybe a Respiratory infection. Also the diet did you feed any veggies or just protein?

It was at least two weeks after I got them, that he died. I never fed them veggies, because I read somewhere that hatchlings are purely carnivorous. I know now that that is wrong.

My guess would be he was sick when you got him. That can happen.
