alot of petshops dont know crap about more than half of the animal's they sell.it's wrong since alot of the animals that get sent home die within a short period of time, theyre's two pet shops by my house and i got 2 RES and one yellow bellied turtle.surprisingly my yellow bellied seem's to be doing ok even though his other companion is severly sick...the other RES, i gave to my girlfriend.the night she took it home, the poor RES's left eye was kind of swollen and its shell extremely soft.when i went to buy them, theyre were about 20! of them in a small container with a little island in the middle, its so sad seeing them like that.i swear on my girlfriends life that the container was no bigger than a small soup bowl and the water wasnt deep at all! it came up to theyre neck, its wrong. i dont know im just in a pissy mood all of a sudden.pet shops should realy look into turtle's and other animal's and correctly inform the buyer's to properly care for them, all the lady told me was to keep them in theyre container and clean the container once a month and refill it with sink water.i asked about basking and she said "thats not important"

is theyre some legal law or something, something has to be done.

seriously. :?

Unfortunately, many of us have experienced dealing with pet shop workers who don't know a thing about the pets they sell - especially turtles. I think the best thing you can do is educate them. Print out some of the articles on the main page (redearslider.com) and give it to the manager and workers.

I found a pet shop about an hour away that does a good job of caring for their animals. The only thing they do wrong with their turtles is they have gravel in the turtle tank. The manager was surprised when I told him I wasn't getting any gravel for my turtle tank. So I explained to him why. Hopefully, he listened and there will be changes made. Either way, I decided I would send him some of the articles from here.

If the turtles are less than 4 inches it is illegal for them to sell them in that manner, and you can call animal control on them. I am not sure what would happen to them after that point however.

Well, you're not going to get any Harvard Law Grads working in a pet shop....If your little RES has only one eye swollen, he may have gotten kicked or scratched by another turt, most likely at feeding time. There is eye drop type medication you can use for this, but I can't recall the name right now, perhaps someone knows what it's called?

I uses Zoo Med Repi Turtle Eye Drops. A few times my turtle has acted like his eyes were bothering him and the drops cleared them right up.

I've heard that seized turtles either get sent to zoos or rescue shelters. I've also heard that some places take them and export them to other countries where they become turtle stew. The only thing that happens to the pet shop is they get fined.
