i was doing a full clean of my tank today, and i took my two RES'S out into a box, i left the room...to the bathtub to empty out the tank and give it a good scrubbing, when i was done i came back in my room and to my surprise they both were gone!!! i went insane, luckily i found them both. one of them was under my bed and the other one was all the way in my living room!

how crazy is that, im just glad theyre both safe.
next time i gotta be more careful, i was surprised to find out how fast and far they can walk in a matter of minutes...
i love my turtles<33 :D

They really are curious, active little creatures, aren't they. And quite athletic! You have to watch them like a hawk.

Semi aquatic turtles are very fast on land compared to tortoises. I think the tortoise that beat the hare in a race was a RES disguised as a tortoise. :)

RES can climb very well. Our female RES scaled the wall of her nesting area here

That wall is about 24 inches tall. I put netting across the top to keep out predators. Luckily it also kept her in.

I had a turtle nearly escape the little bin that I put them in when I'm cleaning. He was near the top when i caught him! I had the dock in with them with thte suction cups hooked over the side. That little bugger got between the wall off the bin and the dock hangers and was scaling the wall!

Same thing happened to me... Except I turned over all my furniture and checked under all my appliances before i found him sitting on top of a pile of clothes in my room staring innocently at me. He was watching me run around panicking...

Yes RES are definately fast. I have always let mine walk around the living room when I clean his tank. I just make sure there's no place he can get under and hide from me. His favorite thing is to walk over my feet. LOL

He also loves to climb over things. He hasn't realized that just because his head will fit under something doesn't mean his shell will. LOL

When I first got Tilly, I did not know about the disappearing acts they can do and I did not secure the top of her tank. She was in my son's room on the 2nd floor of our house and one day my son walked thru the kitchen and lo and behold, there was Tilly just scooting thru the kitchen. He put her up and told me about it, of course I was shocked! She had climbed out of her tank, dropped about 4 feet to the (thankfully carpeted) floor, then went down an entire flight of stairs!

I will never underestimate her again!
