I have a friend looking to get rid of a painted turtle. How similar are they to caring for Sliders? And is it possible to house them with Sliders or are they too timid?

They are very closely related to the RES and their care requirements are pretty much the same as far as I know. I think the painteds are more tolerant of cooler temperature ranges so they should be fine in a RES environment.

I have only painteds, but pretty much rely on the info from this site. They are very similar. My painteds are both very sensitive to cooler temperatures, but that might be due to longstanding, untreated respiratory infections while they were with their past owners. From what I've heard, RES are more aggressive, so you'll have to feel out whether they can get along, just like with any other two turtles. Any idea what kind of painted? Mine are both westerns and I love them crazy :)

Painteds are also smaller than RES, so that is something to consider if they co-habitat. You might also want to feed them separately since RES are very competitive.

Painteds were my first turtles & I agree with Starchick that they can be very sensitive to cooler water temps (in terms of getting RI issues).

They are definitely less aggressive than RES's (my personal experience was that they tend to bite less than RES's).

They make very sweet pets! :) I miss my first 2...they both died of RI.

i have 2 and they thrive in my tank, they were originally from the wild so they are tolerant to a wider range of water temps, i feed them all the same and they are very healthy.
