I find it hard to believe that a yearling female is going to become gravid. And a female that's mature enough to lay eggs will lay fewer and the eggs will be less viable (if fertile) the smaller the female is.

For a large nesting area that's connected to the tank somehow, I would think it would improve the chances of it being used as long as a turtle also had privacy. A sense of control (choosing when to go to the nesting box) would be important. I've seen females dig in several areas, not that far from each other, before they settled on a spot to complete a nest.

I really hope you're right Marisa. I just want to be prepared in case there is any possibility. I think I will use an opaque large tupperware container that she will have constant access to. I will be moving Sparky to his own tank at some point this summer I think, so that might decrease the frequency when she does hit that point too.

My girl was only 3 years old and about 5.5" when I was caught off guard. I was pretty nervous over this winter knowing she was gravid but didn't/couldn't nest.

Hey bubbles, when I was little I also wanted to be an entomologist (but also got over it ) I had tons of bug cages and stuff under my bed (so my mom wouldn't find them) which freaked my sister out and I would keep dozens of potato bugs with little nail polish markings on their backs and track their behavior for a couple days and let them go... what was i thinking? lol

i was a weird little tom boy! (i grew out of it) my favorite were butterflies, but loved all of them. only i could find a preying mantis or walking stick in my backyard. who knows how many beetles ive saved from being crushed at school. i have tons of insect books. by the time i strted getting more focased in art every christmas was so aggrivating because my outer family kept giving me bug books lol. its like OK i am not five anymore jeeeze. now they give me art books. but i did give me this amazing butterfly book recently...so now i paint them.
