My male turtle decided to start flashing himself today. It caught be totally off guard. So much for thinking he was too young. Ha! My female isn't interested in him at all, but they are both just a year old. So that was the mother's day excitement around here. lol.

I posted pics awhile back where you told me that the one was a male. There is no doubt in my mind now, since the nails are so incredibly long. I should clarify, When I got them, the man said they were born in May. However, that was one of those kiosks in the mall, and we all know how much they can be trusted. I prefer to just say their birthday's are in May. Who knows if it is right. They are just about 4 inches each though.

My RES grew long claws and got a fat tail almost overnight (or so it seemed). :)

I have been amazed at the nail growth in the last month. They have doubled in length. As for the puberty...I hope it goes more smoothly than we people experience it, lol.

Can anything happen to a turtle sexually if there is no other turlte in the tank? I have a three year old male, his friend dies 2 years ago..

He may still expose himself, and he may pick a favorite rock to do the mating dance to. No big deal though. He doesn't need a mate in his tank with him.

steve: although it's going to sound "odd". I pretty much knew what my turtles were before they were a year/4". At least they turned out to be what I thought they were.. 2 males and 1 female :) Although my smallest decided to take his time in proving himself.. haha.

I've yet to see him fanning though.. not a bad thing as far as I'm concerned.

I've had my male turtle for 17 years now, 16 1/2 of the years he's been the only turtle. And i've never seen him do any "male" turtle things. ;)

My male turtle also grew into puberty almost overnight....the first time he "flashed" me I was actually holding him in my hand. This was before I knew anything about it and I was honestly really sad about the instance because it certainly ddidn't not look like any animalsanatomy I had ever seen before. I thought he had been cut and it was some other organ hanging out. Also, he had just barely reached 4 inches at the time. Now he's 4.5 and does his mating dance to a few favorite rocks quite often. I even move the rocks around every once in a while just to see if he picks the same ones.....he does. 8)

That's so funny that you move them around and he still finds them! No fooling him, lol

Gmoneyjr, my RES dones the same thing, and the rocks always get rearranged when I try to clean the bottom of the tank. He does go for the same ones each time (his girlfriends). There's one small rock that he will spend a lot of time pawing at it, spinning it around and even nipping at it. It's not a particularly attractive rock. I don't see what he sees in it. Love is blind...

My RES hasn't flashed in a long time that I've seen. He does go under the basking area for long periods of time sometimes. Who knows what he's up to under there...
