My turtle Leo has never been particularly friendly. I've had her for over a year and she recognizes me and doesn't hide from me but she refuses to be picked up without a fight. I think some turtles are just more independent than others.

I think they just have different personalities and depending on the personality will react differently (within certain parameters) to events (like being picked up).

Here's some turtle weirdness: Spot comes and asks to be picked up out of his pond. When I put him on the ground, if I walk away, he chases after me! He actually runs! What I'm not sure of though is whether he's chasing me because he likes me or because he'd like to bite me!

If I'm handling them a lot and spending time with my RES, they want to get away from me. When they haven't seen me for awhile they come over and wait until I pick them up.. or feed them :D

My turtles actually swim into my hand when I reach in to take them out for feeding time, it's very cute but I know it's just b/c they know they will be fed. Thankfully I haven't yet been bitten, I've heard it hurts.

My turtle is only about two inches, but it has successfully bitten me once in the past. It didn't hurt at all...was just a bit surprising.

When they get a little bit bigger it hurts more and more little hatchling bites aren't that bad but my turtle who is very agressive and will do anything to get food does bite and he bites hard.He hasn't drawn any blood yet but I have heard past people who have got bite pretty hard

Here's Beaker telling me how happy she is that I'm picking her up.

She mostly behaves this way when being handled, but I have to be careful when I'm working on something in the tank, I have to keep one eye on her or she'll sneak up on me and......CHOMP!

Spot got me good last year. His bite was surprisingly strong - it really hurt. He took a small chunk of skin out of the tip of a finger and it bled a lot.
