As disgusting as we may think it is to eat a turtle, at least it is natural.

Got that right Greygoose do you know how many farmers mutate there chicken so they can get like five wings out of one chicken. And then they what the chickens eat like there feed they put some type of chemicles to keep the bugs away and the chickens eat that and we are eating the chickens

Also for some reason cows don't farm well in Asia so they don't have ready access to lots of meat like we do. Instead they've learned to make do with whatever is available (turtle, snake, fish, etc).

I see both sides of it. I know that when people are struggling to survive, that conservation of animals and habitat will never be first and foremost for them. I also know that these endangered species are at the mercy of the few people who can help, and that scares me. I think that the key is helping people so that they are able to make a good choice, instead of the lesser of 2 evils. If the choice is between eating an endangered turtle, or starving, I don't think there is a good choice.

The thing is... people do not like being told what to do, by their own countries and definitely by another country. It can even make them bolder.

If you watch tapes from the PETA of the pig, and beef slaughter houses, and chicken farms, you would never eat anything with a "face" again.
Fortunately here in the US we have options. Some other countries don't. Is it a thing of live and let live? Unfortunately, it is, because no matter what we do or who we educate, things will never change. They have been that way for thousands of years. So I guess it is up to us as individuals to do what we can, and just help as many helpless animals that come our way. I am depressed now.

I personally dont like PETA and their videos (if you do your research, you'll find that they are against pet owners - to them we are slave owners, no better than those farmers who chop up chickens). Sure, poor cow, poor chicken - but those animals were bred for that reason..they werent taken out of the wild, they are not going extinct, i mean yeah they suffered a pretty cruel death but it's something that is probably never going to change with farm animals and there are way more important things to worry about than animal cruelty in farms..like the enviroment and how we are speeding up the extinction process for other species, our place in the universe etc..

It is not disgusting or cruel to eat a turtle, snake, iguana, dog, or cat..I respect it, and everyone here should too. A lot of the countrys that eat a lot of our shelled friends are very very poor and catching wild turtles for food is the only way to get food into their, and childs stomachs (a teacher once told me that in some poor countrys they sometimes turn into cannibals and eat one another)..the problem with this is that a lot of species have become endangered due to overhunting - people are trying to do whatever they can to stop it, but it's a hard war to fight...especially when your dealing with starving children..however, the chinese, the pet trade..well, thats another story :?

i mean yeah they suffered a pretty cruel death

In my opinion, no animal should suffer a "pretty cruel death." There are much more humane ways to "slaughter" an animal for food.

I certainly agree with that. As I said, we all have different cultures, and should respect each others way of life.

I do not agree with selling any animal purely to give someone's child entertainment. This is where most of my turtles came from. They were discarded like garbage.

I am sorry I don't agree with most of what you say, but I really do respect your opinion.

Yup..people do look at animals like a childrens play thing, especially small animals like turtles, fish, lizards, and I bet even dogs and cats. But what can we do about it to fully eliminate the problem?

I do love animals, all animals but I think that there are certain things that we have to put first, all our effort in actually. If I were to choose between a human dying or a critically endangred turtle dying, i'd pick a human - if I had to choose between 100 cows, 200 dogs, and 57 kittens dying, or an adult ready to breed endangered turtle dying, i'd go with the turtle.

One thing that ticks me off though is how people automaticly have this "ewww i will never eat a turtle, that is wrong, disgusting, filthy etc" because most of us here eat chickens and other animals and most of us dont see anything wrong with that. What makes a common turtle more important than a chicken?

You are right. That is why I never eat anything with a "face". Not for many years anyway.

Are we supposed to "live and let live", or should we "rally round", and try to make a difference. I don't have any answer.
On a lighter note...Here 's Abby taking in the sun. I don't think I could eat her even if I was starving........

sure is. the scary part is no matter how strongly we hold a principle in our hearts, some of us can switch easily almost with no guilt in dire situations. i cant see myself eating my turtles either...but if you were in extreme situations..like very extreme, almost to the point where you have no other options...would you really spare your turtle. its scary when the darker parts of ourselves take over...what's scarier is that some people deny its existence.

This may be a little of the subject, but there are still cultures that practice cannabalism as a religious ritual instead of need. The Fore tribe of Papua New Guinea eats their dead relatives as a way to keep the loved one with them. There are many other tribes of Papua New Guinea who gave the custom up quite recently. There are also unnamed tribes in Peru that eat people as a rite instead of a need, to the point where non native peruvians simply do not venture into the jungle for fear of being hunted as game. The Aghori, a radical sect in India, regularly consume human remains as a way of disdaning the material world.

Yea, rituals and beliefs are a totally different thing from survival. Is it ethically right for us to judge that as something wrong just because we follow the societal norms and we see that as something wrong? I can't answer that myself. But some people seem to think they can.
