I'm thinking about keeping an eye out in the paper and on-line classifieds for a used large aquarium set-up. It seems that purchasing new at the store or custom place is very expensive and on-line has outrageous shipping. Apparantly aquarium equipment depreciates badly. So... what sorts of things should I look out for if I find a good deal? I know to make sure the tank doesn't leak. ;)

Check to make sure that there are no obvious defects in the product. As for equipment that comes with them, I guess you kind of just take your chances. I personally would only use the stand and tank if I bought used. I like to know that everything else is in working order. I bought a tank from a guy and didn't use the heaters or filter that came with it. I did use the fluval 304 filter, but it didn't last very long. I used it because I had all of the instruction manuals, etc. So anyway, best of luck looking.

I would be cautious of buying something that is used and has moving parts, like a filter. A good brand heater should last, but they are fairly cheap to begin with. Also, anything that has an expiration date or shows no wear when used should be avoided (UVB lights, ceramic lights, any other kind of light, test kits, water treatments, food and carbon media.)

The best deal on anything would be on a used tank and stand. I think the rest should be bought new and from a reputable place IMHO.

Today I was at the flea market and saw a 20 gallon tank with a stand that was $25. It included a filter. The bottom part was missing the black trim, though, so I suspect there was a leak. The stand looked alright (not too rusty) but she wouldn't sell it alone for $5 like she originally offered. It would have been too much trouble anyways. With a wire brush and some spray paint it would probably have looked nice. :)
