Tonight as I sat down watching TV i heard this noise comming from the direction of Kayee's and Kobe's bedroom (their tank). I ignored it once but then I herd it two other times. It's a little after 9:00, right aroudn their feeding time...and I could have sworn that I heard her making a noise....which I equal to her calling me. :D

Is it wishful thinking or do turtles really make noise :?:

My turtle hisses when he's scared (only when he's out of the water), but other than that, I'm not aware of any other noises they make

I hope it wasn't the window blinds blowing in the wind.

I've heard of turtles making noises before... sort of a croaking type sound. Not sure why or when they do this though since it's not something I've ever had happen here.

BTW, your turtles feeding time really should be early in the day. They need time before lights out to digest their food (which they do by basking in the heat) and to exercise.

Well My husband and I are up until like 2:00 am each night, so when i feed them around 8:00pm they have at least another 5 hours before i put their night light on...BUT I'll try doing it at least twice a day in two small servings. It's just that i liek to tak emy time and watch them eat..in the mornings I'm rushing too much to get out to work. And usually we're out late in the evenings so i placed it at a time where i know I will be able to do it the same time each day. Right now I have the basking light on, it's 11:30. I dont leave it on during the day, i'm avraid soemtign happens and it drops into the tank...but they are placed right next to a window so they get indirect sunlight during the day.

i def know what u mean about liking to watch them eat, thats usually the highlight of my day lol (every other day that is)

how long do u usually leave the light on every day? it should be on somewhere inbetween 10-12 hoursa day give or take..

also, not to sound like a jerk, but its a really bad idea to keep your turtle in front of a window. it can cause the temps to be too unstable, plus, the indirect light is being filtered so its not doing anything for him.

i have been leaving my lights on all day while no one is home for 2 yrs now and i have never had a problem before.

Well what id o is clamp it on to the top of the tank..while i'm home, i dont like leavign tit here..even thought he clamp is tight..I am just being an overprotective mommy i guess. When i get home around 3 or so, I turn the light on..and it's on until like....1:00am. SOMETIMES I might clamp it onto the chair rightnext to the table..and let it shine through the side.. but i knwo it's not the same as shining down on them. I might try to get a tube bulb to give them those rays they need using the tank lid when i'm not there.

I dont place them in the indirect sunlight for the purpose of them recieving UV rays...it's just so they have a view of the harbor..something to see. I live in the Virgin Islands...we're alwasy warm down here...so ther'es no cool breezes to come in other than at nights if there is rain, and at nights they have their lamp on so it's still warm enough for them.

I'll try having the lamp on longer for my babies..right now they are both out basking...it's 12:30am. They like to hang late like their mom and dad...well like their mom cause dad is already sleeping. lol

Oh yea i had another question...i read somewhere about turtles hibernating. Is it neccessary to promote an enviornment where my turtles will want to hibernate? and what is that enviornment?

It is not recommended or necessary for captive RES to hibernate. Some species have to hibernate for breeding purposes but not RES. As long as they are kept in the appropriate habitat year round you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Thanks Sonyj, and I've followed your advise...I fee3d the kids in the mornign and leave the lamp on during the day. We bought a 30 gallon tank and their bedroom location has changed so now they are not by the window any more. Haven't heard any noise in a while, Maybe it was the window treatment blowing in the wind....

Mine hisses at me when he's having his shell brushed. He bit me too, but it didn't hurt a bit.

Is there any reason why you are brushing his shell?

Zeke snapped/hissed at my dad (Zekes grandpa and Veterinarian) today when he was here for a visit...of course my dad deserved it...he was poking & prodding him, checking his weight......
