I breed guppies. It isn't all that hard. I started with my old 10 gallon tank, but moved to my 30 gallon. If you want to do a lot of breeding a recommend at least a 20 or 30 gallon tank. I keep this tank set up to the same standards as my turtle tank...temps at 78 and light on a 10-12 hour cycle. I feed plain fish flakes.
I breed feeder guppies and not fancy onces. The males are easy to tell from the females. Just keep them together and within a month you should have babies. May take a bit longer if the petshop gives you exremely young ones.
It would be good to provide some fake plants to hide in, and some rocks that they can hide under...I used some of my river rock. I also have a container that floats that the females go in. It's a breeder container. Theoretically it is to protect the young from being eaten, but I found the thing to be more hassle than it's worth.
