Since many of you prolly don't know what a "freegan" is, I will explain in a nutshell: a Freegan is a person who basically believes in recycling everything, waste nothing. They often dumpster dive & find fresh/edible food & many other brand-new products that are just discarded in our very wasteful world. Of course, there is more to it than just my little $0.02 definition, but I wanted to get to the main point here: I often lurk on a Freegan discussion list online, and just got the following info today from one of the posters which I thought you might find interesting:

first of all, i want to let everyone know that i have recently been
finding lots of food from dumpsters to feed my dog, so i haven't been
buying her food lately.

also, a friend of mine told me that he once found live turtles in a
Petco dumpster!! so, everyone, don't forget to always check those pet store dumpsters!

I was APPALLED that some pet stores are throwing away LIVE animals!!! FYI - most of the posters on this Freegan list live in New York City but I am not sure which Petco she was referring to or the details of why these turtles were discarded. Yet another example of animal cruelty and the many forms that it takes.

Why would you throw away live animals? Thats not even funny, must be some sick sadistic petstore owner who did that.

I thought it was crazy too when I read that & I don't have any of the details regarding why anyone would do that. I know I am not the type of person who could ever allow any living thing to suffer like that.

well i dunno, the fact that these turtles were found in new york, there could be a very good chance that it was one of those crazy asian ladies that sell turtles that discarded sick turtles or something and decided to dump them in a petstore's dumpster in an attempt to stop competition. Although of course i can be totally wrong, but it was just a thought. I responded because i work at Petco and we would never think of throwing away live animals.

this is why i hate petco and petsmart!!! grr!!

they make bad names for the pet stores that actually do good!! like the store i work at for instance. the only live animals we throw away are crickets, and i don't really think they count.

although i will say this. we put our dumpster out every monday and thrudays night to be dumped and then bring it in again the next night. and one time someone put a box of kittens in our dumpster. apperiently they couldn't be bothered to leave them infront of the store like everyone else does. my coworker took them home and bottle feed them (they were like 2 weeks old) and they have now all found homes.

Wow little weasly sounds like you get ALOT of animals dropped off at your store and/or house.

well, that's how i got crush and squirt, fiona (my lionhead rabbit), and the unnamed RES hatchlings. (which actually happened just this last weekend) not to mention the numorous cats and kittens as well as the occational hamsters and rabbits.
but i guess it's better that they leave them at a petstore and not just letting them free in the wild.

but serisouly, things like this make me hate people!!
