Just out of curiosity, does anyone know about how turtles are born in the wild? You always hear specifically about sea turtles, how they go back to where they hatched to lay their eggs, then leave them there and the hatchlings fend for themselves from day one. Is it the same way with regular turtles and tortoises?

I think that it depends on the turtle some go back and others don't. Yes they leave them to fend for themselves.

Like iac said, some breeds simply must have the water, and others simply don't. And, even when born in captivity, the mothers don't pay any attention to their little ones. They only protect the eggs. But, the mothers and babies would probably have some sort of connection, because the babies would have known her before day 1. But, other than that, they don't protect them after coming out of their eggs.
I have two baby RES; Emerald(Emmie or Rocky for short, plus she has green ears!) and Pretty. (Don't ask me about her name. My brother named her. He's only 6 1/2.)
