My turtle is snappy too. I only pick her up when need be now. I use one hand to grip the sides of the shell and the other hand to support under her. You can also use a towel to transport her if you need to. I find my turtle is pretty clear about when she feels like snapping so I haven't had any trouble avoiding her blows.

Nope....if a turtle is snappy, that's just his personality.

You can lessen this snappiness over time, by being really patient, feeding by hand, and making sure they get a lot of attention. When you feed them, don't leave the room while they eat (they should be able to see you). Make sure they only have food in your tank when you are around so they can start associating you with food. A way to a turtle's heart is thru his stomach!

Good luck!

It's just a phase they're going through. Hopefully they'll get past it as they get bigger and less nervous. Just keep spending time with them while you feed them (drop the pellets in one or two at a time, hand feeding, etc). My turtles were vicious when I first rescued them, but now they are really sweet and not afraid of me at all. Once in a while one of them might get a little snappy, but I just try to respect that and don't let it bother me (and try not to bother them when they're in that kind of mood). I'm sure some turtles would just rather be enjoyed from a distance and not handled. That's what makes these guys so interesting. They all have such amazing personalities. :)
