yesterday when i was shopping around for UVB lights, i went into the crappy pet store where they keep the dogs in horrible conditions in aquariums, thought they might have cheap bulbs, anyway i looked around and didn't see any so i asked the guy behind the counter and he goes "we only carry UVA, there's no reason you should ever use UVB those rays are harmful, that's why we humans wear sunscreen." and i said well, turtles need a UVB bulb for vitamin D3, so they can process calcium which they need for their shells..."who the hell told you that?? they're badly misinformed, i have two red eared sliders at home who have never had any UVB light and they are almost 10 years old" and i answered well thats common knowledge, maybe when you got your turtles it wasn't and told him about this site and forum, that he should visit and find out how to better take care of his turtles. "well i don't need an inexperienced young lady telling me how to take care of my pets i run a pet store, and even if we did sell UVB bulbs i would never sell you one for a turtle, that's irresponsible." ugh frustrating, i feel bad for his turtles, i bet they live in a death bowl with gravel and no filter too.

Lordy. Irresponsible? He needs to read a book or two before opening his mouth again...on any subject.

umm, uv in all its forms is bad for us in high doses. but it's still a necessity for all living creatures.

that guy was rude, ugh. is this a chain or privately owned pet store? the guy's an idiot, too. i would've been getting on the phone with the vet to have them back me up, then gone over his head. is there even a vet nearby? i was told that in order to get licensing for a petstore that doesn't have its own facility a vet's office needs to be within a mile of the store.

that whole ''i run a pet store" bit makes me laugh. it reminds me of this girl who got in trouble at work because she smelled bad and she said ''how can they say that i'm unclean, i make soap!" means little if you don't use it. just b/c he owns a pet store doesn't make him an expert. hello, he owns a store period and doesn't know the first thing about proper customer care. duh.

Maybe he doesn't realize that he, as a human, also needs uvb...what a pylon.

haha, no it's not a chain (thank god) well the only herp vet i know of in cleveland, where i took my RES is at the Cleve. zoo, a good 20 miles away, but the store specializes in dogs, my comment on twoster's trip to the liquor store was about this pet store as well, I've thought of calling the ASPCA on them more than once, I might now since he was so rude.

Ugh...man I hate people! I cant imagine how many people went home misinformed by that idiot. Sounds like there was no way of reasoning with him either. People need to realize that JUST because a turtle can live without UVB for a couple of years DOESNT mean that, its okay. Because its not! Turtles have a long life span, all that poor care is going to come back and haunt the poor animal, maybe not in 5 years, 10 years, but just wait and see..I bet my left leg that one of his turtles are going to come down with shell rot, sooner or later.

Definitley. Tell them that he has no knowledge about reptiles whatsoever. Shouldnt be hard to find evidence that reptiles DO need UVB..

Ya you should sick the ASPCA on that guy. Especially for keeping dogs in a glass aquarium!?? What a complete moron! He's like one of those losers that Judge Judy would sentence to three nights chained outside in the cold to a doghouse, or in this situation, stuff him in a 75gal tank and leave him there for a few days in his own filth!

what a moran, poor animals i mean come on it just takes common sense(witch obviously he does not have) to know you don't keep a dog in an aquarium.anybody who does not have enough common sense to know the basic care of his own animals does not need to be in within a 10 feet range of them.

ya, tell me if I'm crazy, but I've seriously been thinking about switching careers and opening my own pet store. It's just too mind boggling to think that the people who do run pet stores seem to be the least qualified to do so. I just don't get it. Anyway, it would be a major change in my lifestyle if I were to do something like that. I'd basically be married to the store for the rest of my life. But I would be doing something that I love doing. Decisions decisions... :?

I say you go down there & show him a book where it clearly says that you need UVB rays as well. See what he says then!

I wouldn't give any of my money to a store where animals are kept like that, even if it did sell cheap bulbs. Why help keep them in business?
