Hello I am the new owner of a tiny RES hatchling which my girlfriend purchased as a gift for me last night through the newspaper while I was at work.

He currently lives in a small plastic ice cream tub with a small round basking rock and a small amount of water. We were told he eats these tiny pellets but I have not seen him do so as yet.

I have lots of experience with RES, Map and Box turtles, but I have never truly owned an RES as a pet for any extended period of time. I will more than likely be bothering everyone with questions I could easily find elsewhere if I looked hard enough and ask frantic questions when my new turtle does something strange/frightening or becomes cracked like Humpty Dumpty. Wish me luck, for my poor little turtle's sake!
My Pets:

1 RES - Pokey, 1 & 1/4"
3 Ferrets - Clyde, Diggy and Squirt

Welcome to the forum. We talked before but anyways...You need to get him an aquarium and stuff. It'll be fine for a little while in the ice-cream bown, but get him at least a 10 gallon aquarium as soon as you get the chance

We should be coming into some money soon but for right now, today, I have a large tupperware tub I could fill with rocks and water. But the filter and special lighting will have to wait for a little bit, would that be okay or will he die immediately out of spite?

I have a heat light for him as well but it doesn't have any special sunrays inside and all he uses it for is basking.

Welcome! Your turtle may not eat until he has adjusted. Even then, without the proper set up, he still may not eat. If the water temp is too cold, they tend to lose their appetite. Make sure to read through the main site so that you can catch up on every thing you need. It will also help to read the stickys at the top of each section.

The lamp I have him under actually seems to be a bit too hot for him, and he tries to hide in the water in the rocks shadow sometimes.

Thank you for the advice, I have been reading and learning since last night as much as I can about them. I love your avatar by the way, I saw it like 90 times before I noticed it was a turtle stack!

Thanks...those are my babies...shortly after I received them. They've gotten so much bigger.

Mine looks like yours in those pictures, he is a tiny guy, I measured him about an hour or two ago and he is almost exactly 1 and 1/4 inches. He is soft and I am so worried my huge callous hands will smush him good... Maybe I shouldn't touch him for the next 11 years just to he on the safe side?

Thank you! I like your avatar did you draw that yourself? The fat feet are great. Once I get my digital camera cord (lost it) and scanner set up I can show you some turtles I have drawn and my little turtle Pokey.

LOL.. no I didn't draw my avi even though I have a few custom art I've made myself on the computer just waiting for my lazy self to do something with. This is actually a pic from a website called Neopets. My kids are crazy about the site and I loved this little guy... :)

I used to have a neopet... not sure it's still active but I had fun with it for awhile.

Let's see here...

Here it is! Hahaha my dear old forgotten pet.. Let's hope Pokey doesn't end up forgotten...

I deleted the pictures but what I did was save the original pictures and then alter them to look evil in MSPaint and made the site as if the pet was an evil warlord haha I should get back into that, my pet had good stats!
