Hi, I'm also new here. I named my female RES Mustang because I thought she was a he, ha. After I found out her gender, the name stuck and it fits her well :)

Hello: We have 2 female RES, Wumsy and Oma, and 2 male RES, Urkle and Smilie. My kids named Wumsy and Urkle. I named Smilie because he had very obvious smilie faces in the spots on his plastron and Oma had very distinct Os in each spot. We have had these RES for 4 1/2 years and keep them in separate tanks so they don't mate.

LJ is names after Lizzie, the large red ear slider that lives at the zoo where I worked. They both have a very nasty habbit of running away!

:msgreen: Our first turtle was named Lily (unconfirmed RES female) - the first (fake) plant we bought for her was a lily-pad & grass. She was kinda/sorta named after the little girl from Modern Family. She didn't make it though - passed away in April at 6 months old (approx). She died of a respiratory infection (too small to treat with the antibiotics she needed)

 Our new turtle we didn't get until September - his name is Daryl (unconfirmed RES male). I just thought it really suited. He was kinda/sorta named after the character from the Walking Dead. 9 months old.

:msgreen: Our rescue we got just a few days ago - her name is Matilda (confirmed RES female). She was consciously named after the character from the Roald Dahl books because of all she had to go through when she was younger. She's VERY smart. Approx 22 months.

Hello I am Elisegeorgina, and I am very new to this site, I joined today. My turtle is called Tommy turtle, TT for short. He was rescued from a rice field where they were burning off the old scrub, He doesn´t seem to act like other tutles that I have been told about. He will not eat vegetation which is a worry, he only likes protein goodies ie. cooked chicken. At the moment he has stopped eating all together, and is brumating. I am not sure if he should be in water or not. I would appreciate any suggestions anyone can make, to make sure he will be O.K. I think that he is quite old really and that he is a male.

Welcome to the site! You might want to make a new topic in the general care section, so we can better help you. Make sure to add;
What lighting you have?
The tank size?
Do you have a basking area?
What is the basking area tempwhat is the water temp?
How warm is the room the turtle is in?
What kind of filtration do you have?
Do you have thermometers for measuring the temps?
What are you feeding him?
How much are you feeding him?
How big is the turtle?
These are just a couple basic questions to figure out what you have. A picture of the tank setup is very helpful too. We are all here to help:)

Thankyou slider-keeper for your reply. I do not have any setup for the turtle because he came from the wild, and I have tried to keep him that way. He does have a small tank in which he feeds. But he doesn´t eat like turtles are supposed to, or how I have been told how they eat. he refuses any sort of vegetation, and only eats chicken or fish, or at a pinch rehydrated cat biscuits. He will not bask in the sun, when I put him in the sun he scurries out of it. so, really I do not know what to think of him. I live in Spain, so he can get plenty of sunshine if he wants it. At the moment he is in a brumating state, but he is not in water. Should I remove him from his box and put him into cold water?

He needs a tank with mostly water and then a platform to climb out of the water to bask. He needs the water temp to be around 78 degress farhenheit, which is about 26 degrees celcius. To accomplish that you need to get a water heater. Then so he can benefit from basking he would need a heat bulb, this will provide the UVA range of the light spectrum for him to see correctly. Next he needs a UVB bulb that will allow him to process Vitamin D3 (this is the process that allows them to stay strong and healthy). With both these bulbs, you need to place them over the basking spot, that is dry and out of the water. By him getting out of the water he will be able to dry out, otherwise he will get a infection and ultimately die. Then you need a good filtration system that will heep his water healthy and clean so he doesn't get sick from the water he eats drink and goes to the bathroom in. Red Ear Sliders have to eat in the water they use the water to swallow their food. By not having a big aquarium to swim in warm water and no heat for him he is kinda slipping into a coma and will slowly go to a point of no return. I know this sounds horrible but if looks like the turtles you see on this website(has webbed feet), he needs to be swimming in water. Red Ear Sliders are aquatic basking turtles, that come from the warm waters of the southern U.S. A captive slider should not be brumating. They do this in the wild when the seasons change from warm to cold. But they do this under water, below the ice. I don't know what the temps are in Spain, where you live right now but if it is not atleast in the 20's celcius then he is not getting the warmth he needs and will get very sick. Sliders are cold blooded reptiles so they rely on the environment to provide the warmth they need to survive and these little guys need warth. You need to stop posting in here and write a new topic in the urgent care section of these forums! I recommend you read all the information about red ear sliders, so you will better understand their needs to survive. THEY DO NOT LIVE IN BOXES . I do hope you will do the research needed and get your turtle the items discussed here or put him back where you got him from if you haven't had him very long and please remember to post a new topic in the URGENT CARE SECTION OF THIS FORUM.

To slider-keeper. Just to let you know that TT has spent a very comfortable night, in temperature controlled water, 26 degrees, I gave him some pellets, but as yet he has not eaten, but then I am not surprised, given what you said about him, that he should not brumate.

That's good keep those temps and give him the heated basking area and his appetite will come around. Keep offering the food and read the info on the site.
