Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Ok so I was wondering if I could keep a yellow bellied slider and a red ear slider in the same tank and if y'all think that a 75 gallon would be fine for them cause I can't really afford anything else bigger I'm just a kid. :)

Excuse me? You'll probably get responses more quickly with a better topic line...

A YBS and RES can be housed in the same tank. Their living requirements are basically the same. As for keeping them in a 75-gallon tank, I can't tell you that unless I know how big they are. Measure the length of the shell down the back from the scute behind the neck to the ones above the tail and don't include the curve of the shell. Do this for each turtle. How many inches total? If the total is around 7.5 to 8 inches, the tank should be just big enough for them...for now. They'll grow and will eventually need an even bigger tank/container.

First off, I agree with Marissa. If you were a bit more respectful in posing your question, you'd find that there's a lot of information on this site in terms of links and the people. They'd be much more inclined to respond if you titled your topic better.

I would limit myself to one turtle if I knew that was the largest tank I could get. That size is perfect for a RES basically into adulthood, so once you had it set up you'd be pretty much set for life. If the YBS and RES don't get along you'll need two setups which if you can't afford, then you shouldn't risk getting two turtles. Turtles really don't like other turtles around so it's not as though the one turtle would be lonely.

Yea, if you can't afford a bigger tank (or another separate tank) you'd best stick with the one turtle. A 75 gal should be enough for a full grown male but not for two full grown adults especially if one or both are females since they get even bigger. Also, if the two turtles should start to fight, you would need to separate them into two different tanks with twice the equipment (filters, lights, heaters, etc). :?

(he he, your headline got my attention! :P )

Ok so I just did my research and my dad is a pro at ebay and craigslist and then when we have the tank we just build a stand for it. Do you think maybe a 120 gallon would do it if that is not large enough then tell me please

120 gallons is perfect for an adult female, 90 gallons will be great for an adult male. If you know what the sex is before you get the turtle, you'll find out that you will have an easier time getting a male.. smaller and no nesting, though you will get fanned!

I don't personally agree with housing them together. The turtles don't like living with other turtles, and they could fight for dominance. Basically, the non-dominant turtle will stop eating completely until it starves to death. I wouldn't risk it.

And I don't mean this as an offense to anyone, but if you don't have the money to properly house them separately, then you shouldn't get two.

But what if both are Res and opposite sex , both 4 inch and in a 90 gallon.
Should they still be seperated?

Only if they dont get along or if one of them gets sick. But in the end, most turtles end up fighting. Turtles dont get lonely, they cant get lonely, there is no way in hell, therefore they like their space to themselves.

If you are just starting out, i would reccomend only one turtle because two will require a lot of money, and space.

And for the note, both sex's will fight..

If they get along you don't HAVE to separate them, though it's recommended you do, just on the safe side.
