Bingo.

Lately I've been changing the water entirely every few weeks. I have a filtration unit, but recently (as in, last week) checked it and realized the cartridge needs changed. Right now they're in 14" x 8" tubs due to illness, and I change those every time I put them into their feeding bowls.

It's really has such a small amount that it would not be a problem (most water supplies, results may vary). Again, nothing beats a properly set up filter that is the correct size for your tank.....And some may argue that high quality carbon is just a luxury and only keeps the smell down but I believe it also adsorbs or at least binds up some of those compounds. In fact, if you have to treat your water with medication (for fish, ich comes to mind) you'd better take out the charcoal, it will "adsorb" it.

he he, that's right..."adsorption"! ;)

Nets are also great for removing shed skin and whatever else gets left in the tank.

I use one of the battery powered vacuums that David mentioned (previous page) and like it a lot. It picks up everything.
