I read a post on here that the sand can clog the filter or something like that. They mentioned to rinse out the sand first to get out the smallest particles. I don't know what other people might use. I live in FL though so there's no need for hibernation here.

This is where I read about the sand in the pan. I reread it and it says you can also use decaying leaves or a sand and soil mixture

Hibernation is not recommended for captive RES (www.redearslider.com/hibernation.html).
