General Care Discussion :: How weird is this?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

It seems like a couple weeks ago I finally got Napoleon's lamp just where he likes it, with the basking temperature around 95, and he's been basking like crazy. I noticed that he really seemed to like basking in the late evening, so I set the timer to turn off around 11 instead of 9, and he goes up to bask around 7 or 8 and stays until it shuts off. I've attributed it to him liking the temperature and the fact that he's getting ready to shed. But for the last week or so, once the light turns off, he doesn't go back in the water! He just sleeps through the night up on his dock! Then in the morning when I wake up he jumps down and starts begging, and stays in the water the rest of the day except for short basks. Should I be concerned?

In general, yes, but that's how he likes it. Any lower and he rarely basks.

It's normal as long as there are no other symptoms of illness (like open mouth breathing, for example). :)

When they're inside and the weather is warm, some of the painteds prefer to sleep out of the water. Even my RES does sometimes.

I used to have a painted that liked to sleep out of water too. It's not unusual! :)

Mine does that sometimes as well. He goes thru spells where his activity/sleep patterns change for a while. :)
