How can I (if it's ok) remove the black rim on the top like this tank?

There are two kinds of tanks, ones with rims and ones without rims. I don't think you should tear off the rims off of yours since the structure might be weakened.

hmm, then the rimless one's should be acrylics then. I like the clean cut looking way the tank above has.

Hmm, I thought that glass had to be glued together which was weak, as acrylic could be molecularly bonded together making it stronger without braces.

It all depends on how the tank is constructed. If it's got a rim on it, it needs the rim for support. Taking it off would weaken the structure.

Exactly. There are rimless glass tanks, but they are fairly small and carry an additional premium.

if its glass and you take the rim off be carefull, I found an old 5 gal. downstairs and the rim on they bottom fell off and i carried it upstairs, next thing i know i hav a 2 1/2 inch slice on my forearm! (OUCH!!) luckilly i cleaned it out very well and put neosporin on it wrapped in up in gauz and medical tape and it healed quite nicely..... its just a warning, glass cuts are th nastiest
